Beatrix Potter
Term 1
Once Upon a Time
In our English lessons we will be reading and writing fairy tales and writing instructions. Children will continue with their phonics lessons on a daily basis and reading at both home and school should be a high priority.
Our main focus subjects will be Design and Technology, where we will be designing, making and evaluating a moving vehicle, and Geography which will involve the looking at globes, atlases and maps and making our own maps.
Take a look at the Term 1 Newsletter for more detail.
Our Maths is taken from the White Rose scheme and you can find parent booklets to support the work we do in class in the folder below.
PE will take place on and Wednesday and Friday but kits should remain in school for the half term. Please make sure all kit is named as this does help both the adults and the children find and return missing items. As the weather gets cooler children will need warmer sweat shirts and joggers as we may still go outside.
Homework for this first term will be daily reading at home and we will send home new reading books on Monday (this will be one they haven't read yet) and Thursday (this will be one they have read in their phonic group already). These books should be at the level your child is working, so they should be able to read or decode most of the words. Reading each book more than once will improve your child's fluency, confidence and understanding. Please do fill in the home/school reading record when you read with your child. This does help us to know if your child has read their book and is ready for a new one.
Please don't hesitate to approach me with any concerns or questions. There will always be an adult on the playground when children arrive in the morning and also at the end of the day.

Term 2
Interesting Individuals
Always a busy, but fun term, we will start by finding out why we celebrate Bonfire Night. In our English lessons we will be writing a recount about The Gunpowder Plot and a narrative and explanation linked to the book Rosie Revere Engineer. We will continue to focus on forming letters correctly and using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces when we write. We have an art day in our first week and this will link to the theme of Remembrance. Then through the term we will be working on drawing and painting activities. Our maths this term is mainly focussed on addition and subtraction. Daily phonics lessons will continue and children will be reading their books in school every day. Please do read with your child at home; it really does make a difference to their confidence and the progress they make. We will change class reading books on Monday and Thursday, and Read Write Inc group reading books will be changed once a week, usually on Thursday. Please read each book more than once as this helps with developing fluency and confidence. Mrs McKewan will be coming in every Thursday afternoon to teach music, especially helping the children to learn the songs we will be singing in our Nativity.

Our Science this term is all about living things, and we will be thinking about how we know if something is living or not. In Art we are going to be learning about sculpture and will be making a 3D bird.
PE will continue to be on Monday and Friday so please make sure named PE kit is in school.
In English we will be reading the story The Last Wolf and our writing will be linked to this, a story and a set of instructions (a recipe).
